DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's lacrosse commemorated the 20th year of its program over the weekend, welcoming over 80 alumnae back to Durham for the celebration.
Blue Devil alumnae spanning all 20 classes got back on the field Saturday morning to scrimmage the current Duke squad. Families and friends cheered on as the teams battled back and forth, with celebrations abound. Following the competitive matchup, everyone came together for a postgame tailgate and alumnae also had the opportunity to tour Koskinen Stadium and the newly-constructed Kennedy Tower.
Saturday evening's events featured a reception, silent auction and formal gala at the Washington Duke Inn. Head coach Kerstin Kimel and emcee Mollie Mackler ('12) were joined in making remarks by Dr. Karen Sutton ('98), Stefanie Sparks Smith ('05), Abigail Meyer ('08), Emma Tucci ('14) and current Duke captain Claire Scarrone ('16). Many memories of the last 20 years were also shared in a video presentation put together by Taylor Virden ('14).
Kimel, who has directed the Blue Devils throughout all 20 seasons, was presented with a special gift along with longtime athletic trainer Jen McCollum. In addition, Duke's 2015 national semifinalist squad was recognized.
The Duke women's lacrosse program was established in 1996 and has risen to one of the nation's elite under Kimel's leadership. The Blue Devils made their seventh trip to the national semifinals last spring and have been selected to 18 consecutive NCAA Tournament fields – the third longest current streak in the country.
In addition to capturing four ACC regular season titles and one ACC Tournament championship, Duke boasts 56 All-America selections, 74 all-region honorees, 64 All-ACC picks and 19 Academic All-America accolades over the 20 seasons. Graduates of the program have gone on to successful ventures in a wide array of professional fields spanning the globe.
The Blue Devils will host a recognition weekend in the spring for former players, current and former parents and fans to celebrate 20 years of Duke women's lacrosse. The event, which will be announced at a later date, will be held in conjunction with one of the team's home games at Koskinen Stadium.
