CARMEL, IND. – The sixth-ranked Duke men's golf team fired a collective 591 (+15) on Monday on the first day of play at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, finishing the day in fourth place in the 12-team field.
The Blue Devils are 15 strokes behind tournament leader Illinois, but part of a group that is bunched within eight strokes of second through fifth places.
“This course is a PGA Tour-quality course and it was set up really well today,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “We battled along today and made some really good pars. We sprinkled in some birdies to get in contention, but we weren't quite as sharp as we needed to be today. Tomorrow is a new day, and our guys are excited for the opportunity.”
Junior Matt Oshrine paced Duke on Monday with a total of 145 (+1), finishing the day in a tie for eighth place. Sophomore Jake Shuman rode a first-round 70 (-2) to a total of 147 (+3) and a share of 11th place after one round of play.
“Matt has a really good touch,” Green said. “He saved a lot of pars and gout up and down really well. He played the par-fives well down the stretch. For him to birdie the last was a great accomplishment today.”
