WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior forward Martine Chichizola tallied a career-high two goals and freshman Ashley Kristen added one as third-ranked Duke rebounded from its first loss of the season to post a 3-0 victory at William & Mary Sunday afternoon.
Eight different Blue Devils registered a shot in the contest and as a team, Duke (7-1) placed 12 of its 18 shots on the day on goal.
"Really, really pleased with the way we came out of the gate today," said head coach Pam Bustin. "There were a lot of things we wanted to improve upon and bring from our game on Friday, and I thought we did a great job doing that the first 15, 20 minutes of today's match. We came away with some goals because of that."
The Blue Devils attacked the cage from the opening whistle, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes. The first strike saw the rookie Kristen from Vancouver, British Columbia tap the ball past the glove of Tribe goalkeeper Meredith Savage at the 4:41 mark. Sophomore Heather Morris picked up her second assist in as many games on the play.
Less than three minutes later, Chichizola deflected in a hit from Kristen for her first goal of the season.
At the break, Duke held a 9-2 advantage in shots. William & Mary had three penalty corner opportunities but was kept off the board by the Blue Devil defense.
"We moved the ball around a lot and we were able to get some scoring chances in the circle," Bustin said. "We played well. We just didn't stay in our game and have our attention to detail like we wanted to for the full time. So we really wanted to regroup and control the tempo of play in the second half.”
Duke's offensive barrage continued in the second half, as the squad matched its shot total from the first 35 minutes with nine more looks. The Blue Devils utilized time of possession to widen their lead in the 68th minute, as Chichizola put back a rebound off of a save by Savage to give her the first multiple-goal game of her career.
The defense did its part, holding the Tribe scoreless for Duke's fourth shutout of the fall. The unit also limited William & Mary to just four shots on the day and four penalty corners.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing posted three saves in the victory while Savage had nine for William & Mary.
“The defense did a really good job of keeping our structure and organization," Bustin said. "Whenever William & Mary was able to generate some kind of attack, we were there to control it and to manage it. Lauren had some good saves today, some big saves again to keep us in the game and keep the energy in the backfield going.”
The Blue Devils return to Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium next weekend to host West Coast opponent California Friday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on Blue Devil Network Plus.
