Duke Prepped for VertKlasse Meeting in High Point

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke track and field team travels to High Point, N.C., Friday, April 4, for the two-day VertKlasse Meeting. The weekend's contest is the second-to-last meet of the season before the ACC Outdoor Championships, which begin April 17.

Three throwing events and five distance events, scheduled for Friday afternoon, mark the start of the VertKlasse Meeting. In the men's shot put, the first event of the meet, redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals enters his third shot put contest of 2014 with a season-best mark of 55-10.50 (17.03), earned at the Carolina Relays March 21.

On the women's side, redshirt senior Michelle Anumba is set to compete in her second shot put competition of the outdoor season after opening with a first-place finish at the Carolina Relays. Redshirt freshman Urina Harrell joins Anumba after posting the fourth-farthest mark in school history in the first meet of the outdoor season, sending the shot 43-10.50 (13.37).

On the track Friday, Duke enters the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the first time this season. Junior Shaun Thompson, coming off a strong showing in the 5,000 at the Raleigh Relays, looks to improve on his personal-best steeple time of 8:58.04, which ranks third on Duke's all-time list.

Duke's school record holder in the hammer throw, sophomore Michael Foley, kick starts action on Saturday, looking to improve on his season-best mark of 184-11.00 (56.38) in the hammer.

Anumba, school record holder in the women's hammer throw, also looks to post a strong performance in the event Saturday morning. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native currently owns a season-best distance of 166-7.00 (50.78).

In the discus, Duke is headlined by redshirt senior Austin Gamble and Boals. The event is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Gamble and Boals, owners of the farthest and third farthest discus throws in school history, enter Saturday's competition with season-best efforts of 173-2.00 (52.79) and 168-7.00 (51.40), respectively.

Also in the field events, redshirt sophomore Teddi Maslowski returns to the long jump after setting a school record mark of 19-4.25 (5.90) in the event at the Carolina Relays.

The jumps also see senior Tanner Anderson, sophomore Carl Heinz and redshirt junior Michael Krone entered in Saturday's high jump. Heinz cleared a team-leading height of 6-7.50 (2.02) at the Carolina Relays, while Anderson and Krone own the highest and second-highest clearances in school history.

Sophomore Megan Clark steps onto the pole vault runway for the third time this season on Saturday. Clark earned a school record in the event opening her outdoor campaign with a clearance of 14-7.25 (4.45) at the Carolina Relays.

Saturday sees a number of debuts on the track for the Blue Devils, including redshirt juniors Issac Blakeney and Josh Snead, redshirt freshmen DeVon Edwards and Anthony Nash and freshman Ryan Smith, all of whom are members of Duke's football team. The five newcomers are set to compete in a number of short-distance events, as well as a 4x100 meter relay.

The women's 200 includes juniors Elizabeth Kerpon and Lauren Hansson, the second and fourth fastest 200m runners in school history. Hansson clocked her personal-best time of 24.65 earlier in the season while Kerpon posted her personal-best time of 24.22 last season.

Duke fields a young contingent in the men's open 800, which includes freshmen Dylan Murphy and Alec Kunzweiler and sophomores Dylan Newman and Tommy Meister. All four are set to compete in the open 800 for the first time this season.
