DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University men's lacrosse head coach John Danowski has been named the 2014 recipient of the Howdy Myers Award as one the sport's most outstanding coaches as announced at the annual IMLCA convention in Baltimore. Danowski garnered the Division I honor for the second consecutive year after guiding the Blue Devils to their second straight NCAA title.
The award is named for Howdy Myers who coached 17 championship teams at St. Paul's, Johns Hopkins, and Hofstra. Myers was elected to the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1971. The nominee for this award has contributed to the game of lacrosse in a capacity over and above the normal efforts and in so doing, has shown unselfish and untiring devotion to the game.
Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, Danowski has led the Duke men's lacrosse team to unprecedented success during his eight-year tenure. In 2014, Danowski guided Duke to the program's third NCAA Championship in five seasons with an 11-9 win over Notre Dame on Memorial Day. The Blue Devils finished 17-3 overall, the second most wins in program history, and placed 10 players on the All-America lists, including Tewaaraton Award finalist Jordan Wolf.
In the classroom Duke was equally as successful as an ACC-best seven players were voted to the All-ACC Academic team and Wolf was picked as the ACC Men's Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year. A program-best four seniors also garnered USILA Scholar All-America recognition. Overall in 2014, Duke had 34 players—over 75 percent of the team—achieve a 3.0 grade point average for the entire academic year.
In Danowski's eight years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 128-32 record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, eight straight appearances in the national semifinals, four in the NCAA title match, and ultimately to the 2010, 2013, and 2014 national titles. The most recent NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of 347 career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns.
The individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered during Danowski's tenure is equally impressive. In only eight seasons, Danowski mentored 54 All-America selections, 25 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, a USILA Midfielder of the Year, and 15 USILA Scholar All-America picks.
Duke opens the 2015 schedule Feb. 7 at High Point. The Blue Devils make their home debut Feb. 8 against Air Force.
