DURHAM, N.C.—GoDuke.com recently caught up with men's lacrosse senior
Kyle Keenan to take fall ball, being a senior and mentoring the young Blue Devils. Duke wraps up fall ball practices in December. The Blue Devils return to campus in January and open the year in February with a host of games.
GoDuke: About being a senior
Kyle Keenan: “It's been a little different. I'm trying to take on the role as a leader of the team and we're also trying to figure out where I'm playing – if I'm an attackman or a midfielder and what will be best for the team. It's been a lot of fun though, just playing lacrosse, being out there every day and being back with the team.”
GoDuke: What was it like finally picking up a lacrosse stick after working with Jeff Howser
Keenan: “It's the best feeling in the world for me because to me I know it [sports performance training] does so much good and I work my hardest at that, but playing lacrosse is the most fun thing in the world.”
GoDuke: On the freshmen
Keenan: “We have a little brother program, where every senior is assigned a little brother and you just kind of lead them in the right direction, kind of look after them. Also, just showing them how we do things at Duke and how we're different and how we play lacrosse.”
GoDuke: What was it like having all of the alumni back?
Keenan: “It was awesome having everyone back from the last couple of years, especially now that I know four different classes of alumni really well, plus the alumni I hadn't played with, but still knew really well. The chance to have everyone back and getting to play them – it was kind of cool to see the dynamic, just one big team. It was awesome to have everybody back and have fun.”
GoDuke: What is your mindset as a senior?
“I'm just enjoying the little things. Just really enjoying playing and playing at Duke, I think that's one of the things I'm going to miss the most. Unfortunately, it eventually has to come to an end, but I'm just trying to take everything slow and praying it doesn't.”
GoDuke: What is the focus right now in fall ball?
“We're stressing fundamentals and showing them [the freshmen] that's how we succeed here, by shooting overhand and two-handed ground balls, turning to the outside. Little things like that will make you successful here.”
