Upcoming Event: Women's Basketball versus Countdown to Craziness on October 3, 2025 at 7 p.m.

11/2/2014 4:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement:
“That was another good game for us to learn things, use different lineups and combinations and play hard. There were some good things and some things that need work, so I felt like we got good things from both exhibitions. Now we have a little bit of time to go back to the film room and go back to practice before continuing on later in the month.”
On what the team did well during its fast start:
“I think the team came out well. They just came out focused and the first 10 minutes were strong for us. We had tremendous slippage after that, but initially we were just focused and everyone was playing off of each other.”
On having a balanced scoring output versus running the offense through the best players:
“I think the answer would be that we want our best players to perform at a high level and have fun doing that, and we want others to rise to that, as well, so the answer would be to have it all. Your go-to players performing at a high level and the others matching that - that's how you score a lot of points.”
On what the team has taken from the exhibition games that will help as it opens the season on the road:
“We just take it one game at a time. To me, it's our third game, and our progress from our second game to our third game needs to be substantial, just like from our first game to our second game. This is how we coaches think. And I like the idea of being on the road because we've had two games here. Enough already. Let's leave Cameron and go somewhere else. It's really a perfect schedule for us. We better be X amount better in game three. Just keep climbing and find little things that make us better. I think this team is very hungry for that.”
Senior Center Elizabeth Williams:
On the rhythm of the game:
“Overall our energy and focus was there. We kept the pace up also. Like Coach said the second 10 minutes of the first half we let down a little bit and lost our pace and that's why the score changed. I think that was caused by a lack of focus and communication, like if someone didn't slide their feet or get out of a screen there was no help side. It was a chain of reactions.”
Redshirt Freshman Guard Rebecca Greenwell:
On her 31 points:
“I was trying to play within the flow of the game. It's easy to score that much if I have good teammates like I do that are constantly looking for me. I think we move the ball really well and we get the ball to the open person. So when I get the ball I am confident that I can finish when I have the open looks. I have to compliment my teammates for that.”
Armstrong State Head Coach Fala Bullock
Opening Statement:
“We as a team, our staff and players, are very excited about the opportunity we had today. I thought we had some opportunities to score a few more points, but for our first time out with a big league, I thought we had a good time and worked on some things that we needed to work on and had some opportunities. So we're just grateful for the opportunity that we've had and are looking forward to continuing on with our season and having some success.”
On the team getting more comfortable as the game went on:
“I wish I could take credit for that, but I think it was just the jitters of playing at Duke University and the players are just so much bigger and more athletic than we are. Our nerves got to us the first few minutes of the game, but I thought we finally settled down and started running things that we'd practiced and we worked really hard. I'm really proud of my team because they work their tails off every day in practice. That competitiveness that you got to see, I see that daily, and that's something that we work really hard on at Armstrong. So I was excited for them that they finally settled down and realized that it's just basketball.”
On the team's up-tempo style during the game:
“I was frustrated with my team because I thought we should've been playing faster. We want to play an up-tempo game; we've got good athletes on our team, we like pressing teams and we were able to turn them over a few times. We've got to convert after we turn them over, but we absolutely want to play that style of basketball. Once we got it going a little faster, that really led to our success because Duke really slowed us down with their 3-2 zone; they got us right where they wanted us. They slowed us down, but when we were able to get a bucket to go in and get into our press, and in that second half, play our style of basketball, I thought we had success there.”
On talking to her team during the game:
“I just said, 'Come on, put your foot on the pedal, we've got to speed this game up, let's go.' It's to our advantage that we play the style that we want to, so during that time, I thought they were scrambling around - my team does a lot better when I don't have to coach them. I can't coach them to go get in that press - they just start doing it. They start making plays, they start making reads and that's about being a basketball player … We're just trying to encourage them at this point. It's the first game of the season and if we can get a few turnovers and scramble and make some plays, that's to our advantage. There's a lot that we can learn from it- it's just about having fun and playing basketball and I think they did a good job with that.”
On the team's prospects for the upcoming season:
“The outlook is positive. I hope to be at the conference tournament, I hope to also be at the NCAA tournament; we're going to take it game by game and just keep forging along and keep pushing ahead.”
Junior Guard Shermika Harris
On playing in Cameron Indoor Stadium:
“It did affect us at first. We came out, like Coach B said, with some nerves, but at about 10 minutes in, we got it together and started playing like a team, like we play in practice.”
