BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Fourth-ranked Duke allowed a season-high three goals – all in the second half – to suffer a 3-2 setback at Indiana Sunday in non-conference action. Coming off of a 2-1 loss at Louisville Friday evening, the Blue Devils dropped back-to-back contests for the first time on the season to fall to 8-3 overall.
After being held scoreless in the first half Friday at Louisville, the Duke attack struck within the first six minutes against the Hoosiers. Junior midfielder Aileen Johnson nabbed the ball away from an opposing defender and sent the ball into the circle for senior forward Jessica Buttinger, who turned and fired it past Indiana goalkeeper Maggie Olson for her sixth tally of the season. The Waterloo, Ontario native also pushed her team-leading point total to 14 for the year.
Johnson also had a hand in the Blue Devils' second goal, which came off the stick of sophomore forward Heather Morris in traffic near the front of the cage. Morris' score in at the 23:28 mark was her second of the season and gave Duke a two-goal advantage heading into the break.
A solid defensive effort in the first half limited the Hoosiers to just one shot on goal in the opening 35 minutes, with redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing turning away the sole offering by Indiana's Nicole Volgraf.
The Duke attack continued to penetrate the circle in the second half, logging four more shots in the first 10 minutes of action. However the Hoosiers were the next to capitalize, getting on the board in the 48th minute on a shot by Taylor Pearson that cut the Blue Devils' lead in half. The home squad scored again less than four minutes later, as leading scorer Audra Heilman knocked in a rebound to knot the score at 2-all.
Momentum stayed with Indiana over the next couple of possessions, setting up the team to take the lead in the 55th minute on a penalty corner goal Sydney Supica.
Trailing late in its second consecutive contest, Duke pushed forward searching for the equalizer. The attack was met by a solid Hoosier defensive front, which cleared a Blue Devil corner opportunity with less than seven minutes remaining and held on the rest of the way for the one-goal decision.
Duke led in shots for the contest, 14-7, and held a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners. Blazing notched one save while Olson had nine in goal for Indiana.
The Blue Devils return home to host Boston College Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m., before welcoming Liberty to Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Both contests will be broadcast on Blue Devil Network Plus.
