
Blue Devils Take Five Matches Saturday

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke's men's tennis team continued action in its two weekend tournaments on Saturday, combining to win four singles matches and one doubles match at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational and the Battle in the Bay Classic. The Blue Devils had three players in action in Winston-Salem and two in San Francisco.
At the Wake Forest Fall Invitational, senior Jason Tahir, the No. 2 seed in the A2 singles draw, began his day with a tough 7-5, 7-5 victory against Rice's Adam Gustafsson in the quarterfinals. Tahir then took on Wake Forest's Sam Bloom in the semifinals and recorded a 6-3, 6-3 triumph. Tahir will face Tennessee's Mikelis Libietis, the No. 1 seed, in the draw's championship at 9:45 Sunday morning.
Also in Winston-Salem, redshirt senior Chris Mengel dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 decision to Tennessee's Hunter Reese in the A1 singles draw quarterfinals. Mengel then moved to the fifth-place bracket and faced George Washington's Benjamin Kaszas, but withdrew due to injury. In the same A1 draw, junior Josh Levine suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback to UNC Wilmington's Chris Van der Burgh. Levine faced North Carolina A&T's Princeton Perry in the 13th-place bracket and recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win. Levine will go against Navy's Calvin Mark at 9:45 a.m. Sunday in the finale.
In San Francisco, junior Daniel McCall, who grew up in the area, advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket before bowing out. McCall opened the day cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Boise State's Brendan McClain. McCall's run was halted by UCLA's Austin Rapp by a final score of 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore TJ Pura dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to California's Gregory Bayane in the first round of the consolation bracket.
In the consolation doubles bracket, McCall and Pura defeated San Francisco's Jason Lee and Alex Santiago 8-6 to finish the tournament.
