CLEMSON, S.C. – The 20th-ranked Duke rowing team notched a fourth-place finish in the varsity eight on the final day of the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell.
The Duke crew of Caroline Kiritsy, Grace Cassidy, Claire Vannelli, Emily Theys, Katie Dukovich, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Alex Stonehill and Hannah Hewitt beat Michigan State and Oklahoma with a time of 6:54.8 to place fourth behind No. 18 Louisville, No. 14 Clemson and No. 19 Cornell. The performance capped a solid weekend for the Blue Devil varsity eight, which took second and fourth in its two races on the first day of the Clemson Invitational. Duke was beaten only by ranked teams in its three races.
In the second varsity eight, Simone Pitre, Allison Beattie, Sophia Blair, Laura Williams, Katie Burke, Victoria Tsamis, Julie Rohde, Sophia Staal and Kaila Perez placed sixth with a mark of 7:27.2.
In total, Duke carded eight top-four finishes at the Clemson Invitational against a field that included seven other top-20 teams. The Blue Devils will get another shot at a top-20 team next weekend when they face No. 15 Wisconsin and Michigan State in Charlottesville, Va.
