Curtis Beach Receives Fair Play Award

DURHAM, N.C. - Rising junior Curtis Beach accepted the International Fair Play Committee's Fair Play Award this past weekend at the German House, the London 2012 headquarters of the German National Olympic Committee. Beach earned the prize along with 2012 Olympic decathlon gold medalist Ashton Eaton because of the exemplary spirit they both displayed during competition.
The Albuquerque, N.M., native earned the award for his "act of fair play" during the 2012 United States Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Ore., earlier this summer. During the final event of the ten-event competition, the 1500 meters, race leader Beach moved aside on the homestretch to allow Eaton to cross the line first as he broke the world record in the event.
The USA Track & Field Trials were the close to a successful 2012 season for Beach where he was crowned the NCAA Indoor Heptathlon Champion and earned All-America honors outdoors in both the long jump and 800 meters.
