DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke track and field team will travel to High Point, N.C. on March 23 to compete in the UCF Invitational. Recently GoDuke.com sat down with senior sprint runner Caleb Duncanson to learn more about the Scarsdale, N.Y. native.
GoDuke.com: What do you have DVR'd?
Caleb Duncanson: Probably would have to be Everybody Loves Raymond or some Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
GoDuke.com: What embarrassing music do you have on your iPod?
CD: I don't have an iPod anymore ... that's kind of embarrassing. But probably some K-Pop songs like the Wonder Girls.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite movie?
CD: That's tough ... it's got to be between Hitch, Glory and Gladiator. And Forrest Gump.
GoDuke.com: What's on your bucket list?
CD: I'm going to say get married and have some kids. I also want to go to Japan. I really like the culture there and I've watched Anime and read Manga, so it would be cool to be in the country for a while.
GoDuke.com: What's the biggest obstacle you've had to overcome?
CD: Probably just being seriously injured; that's pretty tough. And then also Pratt. I'd say that's a pretty big monster. So between the two of those, being seriously injured with the third degree strain and then Pratt.
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite home-cooked meal?
CD: Anything that my mom makes generally, but I really like when she makes white sweet potatoes or carrot soufflé. Or when my dad makes salmon, that's pretty good, too.
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite class at Duke?
CD: Our Culinary Cultures. I'm taking it now. It's actually amazing. We write about food and cook food and read about food. It's a lot of fun and it's made me like writing more.
GoDuke.com: What's been your toughest class at Duke?
CD: There have been so many ... probably Fluid Mechanics or ME 126. That class was terrible. It was non-stop work with problem sets due Monday, Wednesday, Friday and five, three-hour exams on top of it being a really, really difficult subject.
GoDuke.com: Who's had the most impact on your life and why?
CD: I'd say my roommate Jamie Patrick because he cares so much about people and is so generous. He's made me want to be more generous and give more of my time and all of my resources. Rooming with him has been a challenge to me to grow and especially live out my faith as a Christian better.
GoDuke.com: Can you cook? If so, what are you good at?
CD: Oh yeah I can cook. I actually baked a chicken over spring break for my parents. I really like to bake. I bake cookies from scratch a lot and I make pancakes from scratch. Anything having to do with breakfast I can make from scratch.
GoDuke.com: Who would you trade places with for a day?
CD: Bruce Wayne. That would be kind of cool to be Batman for a day. If we're talking about real people, maybe Jeremy Lin. He seems like a pretty cool guy.
GoDuke.com: What was your first car?
CD: It would be a Volvo S60R. It's still not mine; it's my parents, but I drive it.
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite restaurant in Durham?
CD: Dames Chicken and Waffles. It's so good. It's on Main Street. It sounds weird. I would eat them separately at first, but if you eat them together, it also tastes really good.
