Chelsea Gray and
Elizabeth Williams have been selected Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region nominees for the 2012 WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Team, which was released on Thursday.
Other Region II nominees along with Gray and Williams were Chay Shegog (UNC), Shenise Johnson (Miami), Riquna Williams (Miami), Alyssa Thomas (Maryland) and Elena Delle Donne (Delaware).
On, Monday, March 19, the selection committee will review the 52 candidates and trim the list to 40 finalists, all of whom will be in the running for selection to the 10-member WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Team.
A native of Stockton, Calif., Gray owns an ACC-best 6.0 assists per game clip to go along with averages of 12.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.7 steals. Her 12.0 points ranks 21st in the league, while her steals average is fourth. A 5-11 guard, Gray was a two-time ACC Player of the Week selection and is one of only nine players nationally to register a triple-double this year with 14 points, a school-record 13 assists and a career-high 11 rebounds against Pittsburgh.
Gray, who was an All-ACC First Team selection this season, is one of the top point guards in the nation and has already set a Duke single-season record with 175 assists on the year. She has also posted three contests this season with 10 or more assists, which is a Duke record. Recently Gray was named a midseason candidate for USBWA National Player of the Year and Naismith Player of the Year. Gray has dished five or more assists in 19 games this season and ranks 13th nationally with a 6.0 per game average.
Williams, the ESPN.com National Freshman of the Year, has averaged 14.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, 1.6 steals and 1.5 assists on the season. The ACC Defensive Player of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year and an All-ACC First Team selection, Williams is also one of 15 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, which honors the national player of the year.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Williams tied the ACC single season record with nine ACC Rookie of the Week selections this season and became Duke's fourth Blue Devil to be named ACC Rookie of the Year. Her nine weekly selections matched a record set in 1992-93 by Wake Forest's Tracy Connor.
She ranks second nationally with a 3.8 blocks per game average and owns the ACC freshman record for blocks in a season with 109. Her 109 blocked shots is more than 201 Division I women's basketball teams. Williams posted one of only two triple-doubles in the league this season with 18 points, 16 rebounds and an ACC-record 12 blocked shots. In the ACC, the 6-3 center ranks fourth in rebounding (8.3), seventh in scoring (14.3), ninth in field goal percentage (48.8) and first in blocks (3.8).
The Blue Devils are seeded No. 2 in the Fresno Region and will take on 15th-seeded Samford on Sunday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., on ESPN2. The game will take place in Nashville, Tenn.
