DURHAM, N.C. – With just 1:30 remaining on the clock, sophomore Emmie Le Marchand converted a penalty stroke to lift the ninth-ranked Duke field hockey squad to a 1-0 victory over visiting Longwood Sunday afternoon from Williams Field.
For the third time in as many games, the Blue Devils did not allow their opponent to score a goal as Duke limited the Lancers to just two shots for the game. Duke controlled possession throughout and had numerous close calls turned back by Lancer goalkeeper Kaye Goulding, who finished the game with 13 saves. The continuous pressure eventually wore down the Longwood defense, resulting in Le Marchand's opportunity late in the second half.
“[Our] defense has been wonderful,” said head coach Pam Bustin. “The composure, the organization the attitude back there has kept us moving the ball in the backfield, moving the ball through the midfield and thwarting any sort of attack the opponent is trying to create. I was very pleased with that. Now that we're doing so well in the backfield, we have to make sure we're connecting it and doing the same up at the other 25-yard line.”
Duke dominated from the early going, and held an 11-1 advantage in shots for the first half, but the Blue Devils could not break through Longwood's final line of defense. Duke had a couple near misses in the opening period, including a Caashia Karringten shot that grazed the far post before ricocheting out of play.
The Blue Devils continued their aggressive play in the second half, and midway through the period freshman Martine Chichizola received a pass in the circle and faced the Longwood goalkeeper one-on-one. The rookie took the ball right and fired a shot on cage, but a charging Goudling made a great diving stop to keep the Blue Devils off the scoreboard.
“[Kaye Goulding] had a really solid game,” said Le Marchand. “She was pretty aggressive and she came out a long ways, so we were trying to work hard on moving it around and moving it to the sides to get quick shots off. We knew that we had possession and that we were tiring them out. We just kept working hard and eventually it paid off.”
With under two minutes to play, Duke and Longwood remained knotted at 0-0 before the Blue Devils earned their 10th penalty corner of the day. The Blue Devils played the ball into the middle of the circle, where Le Marchand gathered it in front of the left post, and redirected it towards the cage. With the Longwood goalkeeper beat, a Lancer defender tried to stop the shot, but it hit her body, resulting in a penalty stroke for Duke. Le Marchand then stepped up and beat Goulding with a shot to the corner for what proved to be the gamewinner.
“I stepped up to take it and I didn't really think twice,” added Le Marchand. “I was in game mode and it was near the end, so I knew how much our team wanted to score; I knew where I was going to put it.”
Duke faces a tough test next weekend as the Blue Devils take on a pair of top-10 teams in No. 6 Penn State and No. 2 Old Dominion. Duke and Penn State square off Saturday, Sept. 17, before the Blue Devils meet the Monarchs on Sunday, Sept. 18. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m., starts from Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
