SHANGHAI, China – Duke University diver Nick McCrory continued competition at the 2011 FINA World Championships over the weekend, recording his highest individual finish ever at a world meet.
The Chapel Hill, N.C. native scored 501.65 points to place sixth in the men's 10-meter final on Sunday evening. McCrory advanced to the final after a seventh-place showing in Saturday's semifinal round.
China's Qiu Bo took the gold with 585.45 points, while American David Boudia scored 544.25 points to claim the silver. Sascha Klein of Germany finished third at 534.50.
In Sunday's final, McCrory scored 80 points or more on four dives, including a mark of 93.60 on his final dive to move him from ninth to sixth in the final standings. The sixth-place finish marked the highest to date for McCrory in an international competition, following an eighth-place performance at last year's World Cup and a 20th-place showing at the 2009 World Championships.
“I'm really happy with my performance,” McCrory said. “I'm improving my consistency and building confidence heading into next year. I have a few things to clean up, but I'm pleased with my performance.”
The sixth-place finish concludes a successful World Championships showing for McCrory, who also took fifth in the men's synchronized 10-meter event last week with Boudia.
