DURHAM, N.C. - Abby Johnston,
Nick McCrory and
Ashley Twichell will all represent Duke at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China from July 16-31. The World Championships serve as the first opportunity for countries to qualify their divers for the 2012 Olympic Games, held in London, England.
Along with Johnston, McCrory and Twichell, also making the trip to Shanghai will be Duke Head Diving Coach
Drew Johansen, who will serve as the head coach for the USA diving team.
Johnston, the reigning NCAA Champion in the three-meter springboard, will be competing in the one-meter springboard competition for Team USA. The preliminary competition for the women's one-meter begins on Sunday, July 17, with the finals taking place on Tuesday, July 19 at 2:00 a.m. A product of Upper Arlington, Ohio, is a rising senior at Duke and is a three-time All-America and was the ACC Women's Diver of the Year in 2011.
McCrory, a back-to-back NCAA champion, will compete for Team USA in the 10-meter and 10-meter synchronized events. McCrory, who is a junior native of Chapel Hill, N.C., won championships in both his freshman and sophomore seasons at Duke and now looks to extend his success to the international level. McCrory and his partner David Boudia will make their appearance in the preliminary level of the synchronized competition late Saturday, July 16. Finals for the men's 10-meter synchro will begin Sunday, July 17 at 5:05 a.m. He will compete in the individual 10-meter platform competition in preliminaries beginning Friday, July 22 with finals taking place Sunday, July 24 at 4:05 a.m.
Both divers recently worked with four-time gold medalist Greg Louganis during his trip to Durham and look to be strong candidates to compete as members of USA Diving in the 2012 Olympics. You can follow McCrory and Johnston's progress throughout the competition at usadiving.org.
Twichell, an All-America selection during her time at Duke, secured first place at the 2011 10K Open Water National Championship in June to earn her spot in Shanghai. This will be Twichell's first international competition of her career, where she will compete in the 5K distance race. Twichell, a 2011 Blue Devil graduate and product of Fayetteville, N.Y., recently captured first place in the 5K Open Water National Championship, where she posted a time of 58:11.87. The women's 5K event will begin on July 21 at 8:00 p.m. Twichell's progress can be followed at omegatiming.com.
