BATON ROUGE, La. - Seeking its first victory of the season, the third-ranked Duke women's golf team enters the final round of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic only one shot off the lead with 18 holes remaining at the 6,186-yard, par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
In one of the tightest tournaments in recent history, Alabama, Arkansas, Virginia and Wake Forest enter the final round tied for first with a 36-hole total of 601, while Duke and Tennessee are tied for fifth with a 602. Host LSU (605), Texas A&M (606), Louisville (612) and Tulane (614) round out the top 10. The course if very challenging and is featuring over six-hour rounds so far through two days of action.
"It has been interesting out there," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "We have had to think about nutrition -- making sure they have food to eat all the way through to the end of the round since it is taking so long. Also making sure they are resting their minds during the waits because there is a lot of waiting going on out there. It is a little different than the typical tournament. We seem to be staying pretty patient. This isn't a tournament where you are trying to do spectacular things. This is a tournament where you need to respect the greens and playing conservatively -- it seems like we are doing a pretty well of that."
Pacing the Blue Devils through two days is sophomore Stacey Kim with back-to-back rounds of 73 for a two-over-par, 146, total. She is tied for second and two shots off leader Stephanie Meadow (144). Kim is tied with Nicole Agnello of Virginia, Cheyenne Woods of Wake Forest and Megan McChrystal of LSU at 146.
"I am very excited for Stacey, "said Brooks. "It just shows you that she is playing with a lot of heart this semester -- she really wants it. Because playing this course comes down to guts. You have to just really want to get the ball in the hole. You are going to be chipping and putting a lot and you are going to have to use your creativity from difficult areas around the greens. If you relax and don't keep your focus you will get bit with a high number. Stacey has just been real impressive."
A product of Columbus, Ga., Kim opened her play on Saturday morning with birdies on the second and fifth holes to take a two-under-par ledger through six holes. She suffered two consecutive bogeys on No. 6 and No. 7 before making the turn at even par. Kim closed her round with eight pars and a bogey on the 12th hole for a 73. She hit 13 fairways, 11 greens and had 30 putts on the day.
Sophomore Lindy Duncan enters the final round tied for sixth with a three-over-par, 147. She turned in seven pars, one bogey and one birdie over her first nine holes as she made the turn at even par. On the back nine, Duncan suffered a double-bogey on No. 10 and then had three bogeys along with a birdie over the next five holes to move to four-over-par.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan closed with her third birdie of the day on the 501-yard, par five 17th hole to finish with a 75. She hit 11 greens, seven fairways and had 33 putts on Saturday.
A day after shooting her highest round of the season, senior Kim Donovan rebounded to fire a 75 on day two, which moved her up to tied for 65th with a 160. Donovan, who is out of Hopkinton, Mass., notched two birdies to go along with 12 greens in regulation, 11 fairways hit and 30 putts.
Freshman Alejandra Cangrejo carded a 79 and is tied for 46th with a 155, while fellow freshman Laetitia Beck is tied for 58th with a 158. Beck turned in her second straight 18-hole total of 79 as she hit 10 greens, seven fairways and had 33 putts.
The tournament will feature a shotgun start on Sunday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m.
