CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie really enjoyed this one, and there was a lot to love for the Blue Devils.
Jasmine Thomas had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, leading No. 9 Duke to a 71-48 victory against Virginia on Thursday night.
The Blue Devils (25-3, 11-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) held Virginia without a field goal for almost 16 minutes in the first half. The Cavaliers (15-14, 4-9) shot 20 percent (13 for 65) from the field for the game.
''It was a good, strong game for our team,'' McCallie said. ''We attacked, which is so important for this time of year. I also think we set the tempo, defensively, early. I thought the team was really trying to get to the basket and create things.''
Tricia Liston made four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for Duke, which committed 23 turnovers but outrebounded Virginia 55-37.
''Duke's tough,'' Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said. ''They're big inside and have players like Jasmine Thomas on the outside and they're hard to defend, mainly because of their size, their ability to score and their ability to rebound, which was what really hurt us.
''We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight and it wasn't until I changed everything and tried to take their minds off of what was going on offensively that we started to move the ball around the perimeter and take the first open shot, and we really did play well after that.''
The Cavaliers opened the second half with a 12-3 surge to close to 37-28, but never got any closer.
''It was a poor start to the second half and I think the team responded well and recognized that it was important to come out strong,'' McCallie said. ''I was happy to see us turn so quickly and get things going.''
Ataira Franklin led Virginia with 15 points and Ariana Moorer had 14.
