BLACKSBURG, Va.- Duke athletes had a field day in the final tune up before ACCs.
Senior Amy Fryt and Junior Michael Barbas highlighted the meet, smashing decades old school records. Fry finished first with a 13'11.25” jump in the women's pole vault. She broke the indoor record of Olympian Jillian Schwartz set in 2001 by 6 inches; it ranks her 9th in the nation.
Barbas, with a throw of 57'11.5” was the top collegiate in the meet and broke the record of Rod Stweart, set 40 years ago in 1966. Mike Schallmo finished right behind Barbas with a throw of 55'11.5”, just a quarter inch shy of his own personal best.
Redshirt Freshman Michelle Anumba set two more record in the weight throw with a toss of 56'0.75” and the shot put throwing 49'4.5”
Freshman Tanner Anderson continued his winning streak and took first in the meet. While his jump of 7'0.5” wasn't a school record, he has cleared 7' in every competition this year.
On the track, wide receiver Matt Pridemore broke the seven-second barrier for the first time this season to run 6.95 in the 60-meter dash. Also in the 60, sophomore LaCresha Styles ran 7.63 finishing third overall.
Seniors Ryan McDermott and Josh Lund ran 4:02.06 and 4:04.96 and sophomore Domenick Dematteo ran 4:04.81.
The distance women took spots one through five in the women's 1,000-meter run, led by a 2:48.59 from senior Esther Vermeer. Junior Cydney Ross won the women's 800 with a time of 2:08.29.
The team will head back to Blacksburg next week for the ACC championships.
