Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening statement:
"It was a good day for us to learn, to get better and play hard. I thought Chelsea [Gray] and Chloe [Wells] were attacking and learning to get the team in order. I thought their production was very, very important to us, today. Although it didn't feel great to give up that kind of shooting to that one particular player, but it did feel good to play and to be in a different circumstance. I loved the sets that Lander used - meaning the pressing and some of the things they did. We will see it again and we are excited about that experience."
On how the youth of the team is gelling...
"Every day we work to get better. I think we get to know each other better, every day, but I don't think you can rush the maturation process."
On Elizabeth Williams' conditioning...
"We're not really too excited about classes and labeling people due to their class. Elizabeth ran a 10:18 mile and a half. She can really fly. It's more a factor of what she does and I guess it's a neat story because of her age, but really, she's been playing at the highest level there is to play with USA Basketball. We're trying to get her to go harder and we're trying to get her to demand the ball more and be more aggressive in the minutes she plays."
On Elizabeth Williams having just one defensive rebound...
"I would have to watch the film. I would love all of our players to get a lot more rebounds. I can say that, safely - especially our guards."
On who determines who is the point guard (Chelsea Gray or Chloe Wells) on certain plays...
"For the most part, I'd like them to be sort of 50/50 and work it. Maybe time and scores might dictate, but overall, I'm trying to get them to play the game and take charge. I find I'm yelling at both of them a lot right now - definitely in a good way. It's great to have them and yell at them if that makes any sense."
Duke Sophomore Guard Chloe Wells
On replacing Jasmine Thomas and becoming a more integral part of the team...
"It's been fairly difficult. All of those minutes she was playing, I was watching, but I paid attention and I learned a lot from Jas, so I'm taking it all pretty well."
On aspects of her game that have changed...
"I'd say getting my teammates going, first. A lot of times last year I came off the bench unsure of myself, and I was trying to just run the play, but that was freshman year, so I'm trying to get my teammates going, make sure they're in place and then be in attack-mode as well."
Duke Sophomore Guard Chelsea Gray
On guarding Jasmine Judge and the plays they used to get her open...
"They did a good job of finding her. On defense, we weren't talking - locating the shooters. She was running baseline sometimes, so that's just comes and we had to know where she was and locate her."
