NEWTON, Mass.-Boston College forward Charlie Rugg scored with 3:41 remaining in the second overtime as Duke fell to the 18th-ranked Eagles this evening in front of 1,223 fans at Newton Campus Field. Christopher Tweed-Kent scored the Blue Devils' lone goal of the game.
Duke falls to 7-6-1 overall and to 3-3-1 in ACC play, while Boston College improves to 11-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 against conference foes. The overtime loss was Duke's third of the season, while the one-goal setback was its fifth of the year.
Duke controlled the run of play in the opening 45 minutes. The Blue Devils possessed the ball very well and started to build momentum in the attack as the half went on. The first good look at goal game about 18 minutes into the stanza as freshman Nick Palodichuk ran at the Eagles' defense. He fed a through ball to Wenger, who was whistled for offside as he put it in the back of the net.
Nearly 10 minutes later, the Blue Devils got on the scoreboard for the 1-0 advantage. After a ball was cleared out, Dan Tweed-Kent regained possession and served it back into the attacking third. Palodichuk collected the ball and served it to the far post where Christopher Tweed-Kent used a deft first touch to set up his finish past Boston College goalkeeper Justin Luthy.
Duke continued to put pressure on Boston College and generated a few more good scoring chances. On the other end of the field Duke maintained its composure and stayed organized to keep the Eagles' attack in check. Duke goalie James Belshaw made a couple of good saves to keep the Eagles off the board and send Duke into halftime with the 1-0 lead.
Boston College came out strong in the second half and started to build a rhythm of its own. After building momentum throughout the 45 minutes, the Eagles finally broke through to tie the score in the 77th minute with a goal from Diego Medina-Mendez. After Duke was unable to clear the ball out of the penalty area, Medina-Mendez capitalized on the loose ball and put it in the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Both squads continued to battle for the final 14 minutes, but neither team was able to get the game winner in regulation. The Eagles had the best chance in the final minutes with a good build up resulting in a shot from the top of the 18 that Belshaw did well to save.
The first overtime resulted in just two shots overall. Duke's lone shot was on goal, forcing Luthy to make the save and keeping the game even at one.
In the second overtime, Boston College took advantage of an open field as a pass skipped past the foot of Andrew Morales. Kyle Bekker got the ball at his feet and found Rugg streaking at the top of the penalty area. The Eagles' forward stayed strong on the ball despite pressure and was able to beat Belshaw for the 2-1 victory.
Duke held an 18-14 advantage in shots for the game and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. The Blue Devils have outshot its opponents in all six of their losses this season.
Belshaw finished with five saves, while Luthy had six.
Duke heads out of conference next, hosting UNC Asheville on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
