Freshmen Sean Davis and Andrew Morales both registered their first career goals for the Blue Devils Duke falls to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in ACC play.
Duke controlled the run of play through the first 15 minutes, but Maryland had the best opportunity in that stretch as Patrick Mullins received a long ball in behind Duke's defense and had a one-on-one with Duke goalkeeper James Belshaw. The junior keeper came off his line and made the big save on the shot to keep the Terps from getting on the scoreboard in the early minutes.
Duke's first good look at the goal of the game resulted in a score in the 13th minute. Freshman Sean Davis collected a pass from Christopher Tweed-Kent in the middle of the field and took a half chance from 20 yards out. Catching Maryland goalie Will Swaim off guard, Davis' shot skipped low into the right corner for the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
Just over two minutes later, Sunny Jane registered the equalizer by slipping a shot past Belshaw to the left corner. Casey Townsend flicked on a long ball and Jane got loose behind Duke's defense and was able to finish the one-on-one with Belshaw.
Both squads traded some opportunities in the final 30 minutes with the Terrapins nearly taking the 2-1 lead late in the session. Kaoru Forbess' got open in the box, but his shot deflected off the left post and skipped along the goal line and Duke cleared it away.
The Terrapins opened the second half by controlling much of the possession and took advantage in the 55th minute winning a penalty kick. A long cross into the box found Jane on the far side. The midfielder headed it down to the feet of Townsend as he drew a penalty in the box. Stertzer stepped up and knocked in the penalty kick for the 2-1 lead.
Ten minutes later it was Stertzer again getting in on the action as he headed a ball past the near post after a header from Jane. It marked his third multiple-goal game of the year.
With Duke up a man due to a red card to Maryland late in the second half, the Blue Devils dominated play. The Blue Devils earned numerous corner kicks, but could not get on the scoreboard. Sebastien Ibeagha nearly made it a one-goal game as his shot was saved by Swaim to keep Maryland's cushion at two.
Patrick Mullins sealed the victory in the 85th minute for the Terrapins with his sixth goal of the year. Morales rounded out the scoring for the game as he one-timed a failed clearance past Swaim for his first career score.
Duke held an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks for the game. Belshaw finished with five saves, while Swaim had four for Maryland.
