NEW YORK, N.Y. – Duke Sophomore Curtis Beach completed competition Friday night at the first ever Millrose Multi Challenge at the historic Madison Square Garden.
The lone collegiate athlete, Beach was matched against some of the best decathletes in the world in the three-event competition. Reigning NCAA Champion Ashton Eaton, reigning World Champion Trey Hardee, reigning Olympic Champion Bryan Clay and 2006 & 2007 NCAA Champion Jake Arnold, were all matched up against Beach in the shot put, 60-meter hurdles, and high jump.
“We talked a lot about attitude going into the meet,” said Associate Head Coach and Beach's technical coach Shawn Wilbourn. “We talked about going in, having fun, doing your best, and he did that. He set three P.R.s. That's all we could ask for.”
Beach's best showing was in the final event, the high jump, where he finished second behind Ashton Eaton. His 6'8.75” effort was the fourth highest jump in Duke track and field history. His time of 8.30 in the 60m hurdles was also the fourth best time in Duke history.

Wilbourn will return to North Carolina to coach the rest of his athletes at the Kent Taylor-Run for the Kids Invitational. The team will then rest and prepare to compete at the Armory Collegiate next weekend.
