FARMVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Mary Nielsen tallied two goals as the No. 10 Duke field hockey team downed Longwood, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in Farmville, Va.
The Blue Devils, now 2-1 overall, dominated the Lancers throughout, firing 20 shots for the game, 11 on goal. The Lancers relied heavily on their goalkeeper Kaye Goulding to turn back the Duke attack as the sophomore was forced to make several exceptional plays to turn back the Duke attack. The Blue Devil defense was equally as solid, limiting Longwood to just one shot.
"I thought we turned in a pretty dominating performance," head coach Beth Bozman said. "We still need to work on our finishing, so that is something we will try and correct tonight we before we play a really tough James Madison [team]."
Duke opened the game in complete control and broke through the Lancer defense in the 25th minute to take the 1-0 lead as Nielsen, assisted by junior Rhian Jones, found the back of the cage.
The Blue Devils' second goal came two minutes later as Nielsen beat the Longwood goalkeeper on a shot from three yards out to put Duke up 2-0. The goals were the first two of the year for Nielsen, who led all Duke freshmen with 11 points a season ago.
Next up, Duke travels to Harrisonburg, Va., tomorrow, Sunday, September 5, for a 2 p.m. meeting with No. 12 James Madison, the Blue Devils' third ranked opponent in four games this season.
"It's always a key regional game," Bozman said. They're a competitive, tough team. I think they're going to be similar to Michigan State, so we hope to fix a few things and give them a good game tomorrow."
