The Blue Devils led the Spartans in both shots (16-5) and penalty corners (8-2) for the game, but were unable to break through the Michigan State defense despite putting 10 shots on cage.
Both teams battled through a scoreless first half, and Michigan State was able to break the 0-0 tie 14 minutes into the second frame. The Spartans converted a penalty corner at the 49:29 mark as Kristen Henn scored on a shot from the top of the circle to give MSU the 1-0 advantage.
Despite the deficit, Duke stepped up the pressure and outshot Michigan State 7-0 over the final 20 minutes of play. Yet the Blue Devils were turned back by Spartan goalkeeper Molly Cassidy, who totaled 10 saves for the afternoon.
Freshman Emmie LeMarchand led Duke with four shots, two on goal, for the game, while senior Susan Ferger, junior Jordan Miller and freshman Grace Christus had two shots apiece. In goal, senior Samantha Nelson made one save and allowed one goal in the loss.
Duke returns to action next weekend, September 4-5 as the Blue Devils travel to both Longwood and James Madison. The Blue Devils take on the Lancers in Farmville, Va., on Saturday, September 4 at 1 p.m., then head to Harrisonburg, Va., for a 2 p.m. tilt with JMU on Sunday, September 5.
