Blue Devils Prepare for FIL World Championships

DURHAM, N.C. - Several former Blue Devil standouts will represent their countries this week at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships in Manchester, England. Three former Blue Devils will suit up for the United States and one other will don a jersey for Canada. Both squads will kick off action on July 16 in Manchester.
Former Duke players Kevin Cassese, Ned Crotty and Matt Zash are all midfielders on the squad, with Cassese serving as one of the team's captains along with Ryan Powell. Cassese most recently played for the Boston Cannons during the 2009 Major League Lacrosse campaign and now serves as the men's lacrosse head coach at Lehigh University. Crotty is currently a rookie for the MLL's Chicago Machine, while Zash is a member of the Long Island Lizards.
In addition, former Duke star Zack Greer will play for Team Canada at the international tournament. Greer is also a member of the MLL's Long Island Lizards.
Thirty countries will be vying for gold at this year's FIL World Championships. Opening ceremonies will be on Thursday, July 15, and the United States is set to open pool play against Australia on Friday, July 16. The U.S also will face off against Canada, the Iroquois Nation, England and Japan before the round of medal play begins on July 22. The FIL World Championship Final will be played on July 24 at 11 a.m. EST, and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
