PHILADELPHIA – The Duke track and field team completed a successful trip to Philadelphia for the 116th annual Penn Relays Saturday with two Blue Devil relay teams rewriting the school record books.
The women's 4x800m relay broke the previous Duke record of 8:41.96 for the event with an 8:33.37 performance. Leslie Morrison led off the race with a 2:10.07 mark, followed by Devotia Moore in 2:07.10. Cydney Ross clocked a 2:08.30 split, while Esther Vermeer ran a 2:07.91 final leg.
On the men's side, Duke turned in the No. 2 all-time performance in school history in the 4xmile, clocking 16:22.77. The team, which consisted of Joshua Lund, Ryan McDermott, Bo Waggoner and Cory Nanni, eclipsed their own mark of 2:32.40 set in 2009. The group's time was .44 seconds shy of the all-time Duke mark of 16:22.34, set in 1973. In addition, Nanni's split of 3:59.5 was the third fastest of any competitor on the day.
2010 ACC Champion John Austin, who has finished no lower than second this season, captured another first-place finish on Saturday in the javelin. Austin's throw of 220-feet, 7-inches was tops in the field by nearly seven feet.
Duke closed out the weekend with the men's 4x800m relay capturing a fourth-place finish. Sean-Pat Oswald led off with a 1:52.1 and Nanni continued his strong day with a 1:52.7 split. Ken Sullivan ran a 1:54.3 third leg before Chris Rowland ended the race with a 1:51.3.
Next up, the Blue Devils will host the Duke Twilight at Wallace Wade Stadium on Sunday, May 9.
