Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Windy City Collegiate Classic on September 29, 2025

4/2/2010 9:00:00 PM | Women's Golf
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The fifth-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the 2010 Bryan National Collegiate on Friday with a five-over-par, 293, and sit in sixth overall with 36 holes remaining at the 6,323-yard, Par 72 Players Course at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center.
With perfect golfing conditions, Tennessee opened with a one-under-par, 287, while Wake Forest (289), Florida State (291), Vanderbilt (291), Ohio State (292), Duke (293), South Carolina (294), North Carolina (301), College of Charleston (302) and Auburn (303) rounding out the top 10.
"We played ok -- we didn't play great," said Duke Head Dan Brooks. "We are in a totally different level of difficulty here. It is an easier golf course, the pins are not as tucked and the wind isn't blowing compared to Georgia. That means you are going to have a lot of teams near the top. There are a lot of teams who are shooting similarly. I am kind of hoping for some conditions tomorrow -- some wind -- something to make things more challenging so we can show our skills and separate a bit."
Leading the Blue Devils on day one was senior Alison Whitaker with a one-under-par, 71, which has her tied for sixth individually. A native of Melbourne, Australia, Whitaker opened the day with a par and birdie on her first two holes before collecting five straight pars. From holes 8-11, she suffered two bogeys and two pars before finishing the day with a two-under-par ledger over the final seven holes.
"You are not going to keep Alison down very long, after having a couple of rough days at Georgia," said Brooks. "I think she is back together. A lot of this here is just getting the putter going. I think she made some putts."
Coming off notching her first collegiate victory last weekend at the Liz Murphey Collegiate, freshman Lindy Duncan had a stellar round going on Friday as she was two-under-par through 10 holes before closing with back-to-back bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17 to finish at even par. A product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan is tied for 10th overall through 18 holes.
Both freshman Stacey Kim and Kim Donovan each registered rounds of 75 on day one and are tied for 30th. Freshman Courtney Ellenbogen finished with an 80 and is tied for 76th.
Duke will tee off on Saturday beginning at 9:05 a.m., along with Ohio State and Vanderbilt.
