RALEIGH, N.C./STANFORD, Calif. - Duke track and field began a full weekend schedule Friday, March 26 with several Blue Devil athletes competing at the Raleigh Relays and the Stanford Invitational.
Duke's largest contingent of athletes made the short trip for the Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State at Paul Derr Track. The Blue Devils' best performance of day one in the Capital City came this afternoon as the men's 4x1,500m relay took first place out of a field of ten. The relay team of James Kostelnik, Joshua Lund, Ryan McDermott and Cory Nanni clocked 15:29.89, good for third place in the Duke record books.
Michael Barbas got things underway this morning in Raleigh for the Blue Devils, turning in a 45.12m (148-00) performance in the discus throw before recording a ICAAAA qualifying 15.63m (51-3.50) mark in the shot put later this afternoon.
Several Devil distance runners made the trip out west to take part in the 5,000m run at the Stanford Invitational, one of the largest meets in the country, held at Cobb Track and Angell Field. On the men's side, Bo Waggoner, an Indoor All-ACC performer in the event, posted a 14:24.71 time to take 19th in his section.
For the women, Suejin Ahn led the way with a personal-best 16:23.84 over 5,000m, followed closely by cross country All-America Carly Seymour's personal-best 16:24.84 clocking. Kayla Hale and Mary Carleton Johnston also posted personal bests with 16:38.37 and 16:41.55 showings, respectively, while Katelyn Bastert (16:37.97), Amanda Truelove (16:42.97) and Kristina Krasich (17:36.08) completed the Blue Devil group.
Day two at the Raleigh Relays begins for Duke Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with David Piccirilli in the hammer throw. Duke track and field traveled a group to the Arizona State Invitational as well, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday morning with Curtis Beach in the discus throw.
