FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Duke University freshman Curtis Beach sits in 13th place in the heptathlon through day one at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville's Randal Tyson Track Center.
The Blue Devil rookie has totaled 2,914 points through the first four events and will look to move up the standings on day two. The 2009 NCAA Champion, senior Ashton Eaton of Oregon, leads all competitors with a mark of 3,561 after setting meet records in three events on the day.
The multi-event competition began with the 60m dash this morning, where Beach finished in 14th place, good for 775 points. The Albuquerque, N.M., native turned in his best result in the long jump, taking ninth with a leap of 7.04m (23-1.25) to tack on 823 points. Beach recorded a season-best 11.50m (37-8.75) throw in the shot put, good for 14th place, and finished the day with an 11th-place, 1.93m (6-4) clearance in the high jump.
Beach, Duke's first male individual track athlete to make the NCAA field since 1981, will compete in the final three events of the heptathlon tomorrow, Saturday, March 13, starting at 11 a.m. First up is the 60m hurdles, followed by the pole vault and concluding with the 1000m.
