Duke (15-7) rolled past North Carolina 18-9, Air Force 20-7 and Brandeis 19-8 on the final day of the team's annual home meet. The win over North Carolina wrapped up a sweep over the Tar Heels that began with a 17-10 win from the men's team on Saturday. With the win, Duke gains another half point in the Carlyle Cup standings.
The Blue Devils' only loss on Sunday was to the defending NCAA Champion Penn State Nittany Lions, who emerged with a 16-11 win to go undefeated on day two at the tournament. Ward and D'Agostino won all three of their bouts against Penn State, defeating several All-Americas in the process.
Penn State, however, took home the women's saber, foil and epee cups, which are awarded to the team with the most individual wins in each category. The Penn State men also won the saber and foil cups on Saturday.
Ward, who leads Duke with a 60-1 record, led the women's saber squad to a 3-1 finish on the day and accounted for 12 of the group's 24 individual wins. Fellow saber Ashley Donald chalked up six wins to help the squad take second in the saber cup standings.
D'Agostino continued her torrid pace to improve to 48-11 in her first collegiate season. In going 3-0 against Penn State, D'Agostino defeated two All-Americas, including defending NCAA Women's Epee Champion Anastasia Ferdman. D'Agostino won 10 straight bouts to close out the Duke Home Meet and helped the epee squad finish 2-2 on the day.
In foil action, freshman Lily Shepard posted an 8-2 record to help the squad finish 2-2 on the day. Classmate Keara Mageras collected six wins to become the first Duke women's foil to reach 40 wins this season. Senior captain Noel Shaskan also finished over .500 on the day by winning her last three bouts to finish with a 6-4 record. Erin Pytel also finished with a 5-3 record.
The Blue Devils will now have three weeks to prepare for the Temple Duals on Feb. 27 in Philadelphia, Pa. Duke will have another rematch with Penn State at that event while also facing NYU, St. John's and the Temple women's squad. That will be the final regular-season meet before the Mid-Atlantic South Regionals on March 13 and the NCAA Championships on March 25-28.
