BLACKSBURG, Va. - Duke University senior Karolina Haraldsdottir earned All-ACC honors with a third place finish in the pentathlon on day one of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Haraldsdottir totaled a personal-best 3,910 points to set a new Duke school record and earned a provisional qualification as well as the first All-ACC honors of her career.
Clemson's Liane Weber won her second straight gold medal in the event with 4,262 points, while Maryland's Kiani Profit took silver with 4,089 points.
Haraldsdottir began the day with a 14th-place finish in the 60m hurdles, clocking 9.27, but tied for first in the high jump with a personal best 1.73m (5-8). The Rochester, Minn., native's mark is also the third-best in Duke history, behind only Debra Vento's 5-11.5 set in 2005 and Kelly Miezkalski's 5-8.75 set in 1990.
The Duke senior continued her record-setting day with a personal-best 12.83m mark in the shot put to take first in that event and also move into third place all-time in the Devil record books. Haraldsdottir closed out the competition with a long jump mark of 5.36m (17-7) and an 800m time of 2:22.54.
After day one, the Duke women are currently tied with North Carolina for third place with six points, trailing second-place Maryland (eight points) and first-place Clemson (14 points).
On the men's side, two Blue Devils competed in the heptathlon, finishing the first four of the seven events on day one.
Duke freshman Curtis Beach with 3,087 points is currently in third place behind Clemson's Miller Moss (3,108) and two-time defending champion Gonzalo Barrhoilhet of Florida State (3,090) as the ACC boasts four nationally-ranked athletes in the event. Duke senior Buzz Moorman stands in seventh place with a total of 2,704.
Moorman and Beach both posted 7.21 times to tie for fourth in the 60m dash to open the competition. Beach took first in both the long jump and the high jump with 7.22m (23-8.25) and 2.05m (6-8.75) marks, respectively, while Moorman's best performance also came in the long jump as the senior recorded a 6.57m (21-6.75) jump.
The 2010 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships will resume tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 26, at noon and will run into the early evening. Highlights will include the conclusion of the men's heptathlon, finals in the men's and women's field events and qualifying heats in the running events. Finals in most of the running events are scheduled for Saturday.
