DURHAM, N.C. - Throughout the year, senior Christie Kaestner will send blog updates to GoDuke.com, giving fans inside access to the Duke women's lacrosse team. Read her 11th post below to learn how the team celebrates the holiday season.
Oh the weather outside is … FRIGID,
Hey there everyone! How is everyone doing with the horrendous weather? We are absolutely freezing in Durham - I can't even imagine how bad it is in Boston, Chicago, Connecticut and New York; Lord, help you all.
Besides the weather, it has been an eventful and full blast week in the dirty dirty! Let's start off with Monday, our last day of team activity before the winter break. The coaching staff surprised us with the ultimate Duke scavenger hunt! Holy reindeer hooves it was wild. It was the Blue Team vs. the White Team with a full five points at stake for the winners. We were given one hour and a list of 15 or so things to do such as get someone gift wrapped at the bookstore, get a picture in the men's basketball locker room, come back dressed as another athlete, get a band shirt and instrument, and the coup de grace, something “unique.” Needless to say, things got intense, ridiculous and memorable. Some highlights for you: Virginia Crotty in a full football uniform, pads and all; Taylor Virden playing a tune on a trombone; Rebecca Krom and me in Jon Scheyer and Brian Zoubek's game uniforms; Emma Hamm kickin' it behind Dr. White's desk even though he was out of town; and finally, freshman basketball phenom Kyrie Irving in a fireman outfit rocking a blue team shirt to capture the victory for BLUE TEAM. It was a fantastic experience and I think everyone had a great time, all points aside.
We also had our team Christmas party at Ker's house and were treated to delicious tacos, music, holiday spirit and some lovely jackets. And by lovely I mean I haven't taken it off since I got it, nor have about two thirds of our team. We also had a fun team gift exchange at our apartment that included a Hawaiian nutcracker for Virginia from Maddy Morrissey, though I think Miller Hughes claimed it was Samoan.
Overall we had a great time this week, attempting to lighten the stress levels that skyrocketed with final exams. Some people are getting crushed by work while others (maybe like myself) are already home, writing blogs from the couch in front of a fire, hoping everyone else can finish up asap and get home to moms and dads. I raced home today in time for my brother's birthday party and was greeted by cousins, uncles, grandparents, parents, my kitties, a fire, stockings, ornaments to hang on the tree and an unhealthy amount of food. I can't move. Parents out there, we need this. Wait on us hand and foot. I will say that I miss all my friends a lot alreadyL. It's incredible the hole you feel without your teammates around you everyday. We certainly are lucky to have such a great family in Durham.
So anyhow, that's it until after Christmas! I will check in after Winter Camp, as a few of us will be down there together and there will be many funny stories about Christmas day and camp alike. Friends, family, fans and strangers - have a very Merry Christmas from our Duke Lax family to yours. Remember the reason for the season and we are blessed to have you in our lives. Stay warm, remember to leave cookies (and a carrot!) and no peeking at the presents!
Love, lax, no speeding tickets and Frasier firs,
- Christmas, er, Christie -
P.S. “Give a shout out to the senior parents for your father and me! Merry Christmas during our last Duke Christmas together!”- my mother, in her PJs, on her way over to snuggle on the couch with me.
