FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- The Duke men's golf team, ranked 20th in the latest Golf World / Nike Golf Coaches' Poll, posted a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 match play win over Texas Christian on Tuesday at Colonial Country Club. Austin Cody, Wes Roach and Julian Suri collected wins, while Yaroslav Merkulov halved his match.
Cody collected a 6 & 4 win over TCU's Johnny Antle. He won the opening hole and made the turn at Colonial CC with a 2-up edge. Cody came out a posted wins on four of the first six holes on the back nine to secure the victory.
Roach racked up a 4 & 3 win over Ian Phillips. He grabbed a 1-up lead three holes into the match and added wins on No. 5, No. 8, No. 11 and No. 13 to push the match to dormie. Phillips won his only hole on No. 14 before Roach parred No. 15 to secure the victory.
Suri got off to a strong start in a 1-up victory over Matt Johnson. He never trailed in the match and held a 4-up edge through 11 holes of play. Johnson came back with wins on No. 13, No. 15 and No. 16 to trim the deficit to one. Suri recoverd to finish par-par and secure the 1-up victory.
Merkulov dropped the opening hole in his match with Johan DeBeer to go one-down. He recovered to win holes No. 4 and No. 5 to take a 1-up advantage. The Penfield, N.Y., native lost No. 11 and No. 12 before winning the next three holes take a 2-up lead with three holes remaining. The match went dormie following a tie on No. 16 before DeBeer recovered to win No. 17 and No. 18 to halve the match.
Sophomores Brinson Paolini and Adam Sumrall both fell 3 & 2 in their matches. Paolini fell behind early in his match and was 4-down through 11 holes. He bounced back to win two of the next four holes before Scott Roudebush closed out the match on No. 16.
Sumrall won the opening hole in his match before dropping six of the next seven holes. The South Bend, Ind., native added wins on No. 10 and No. 14 to get back in the match. TCU's Eduardo Perez matched him shot for shot over the next two holes to claim the win.
