FRESNO, CALIF. -- The Duke men's golf team sits in second place after 36 holes of play at the Fresno State Lexus Classic at Sunnyside Golf Course (par 72, 6,950 yards). The Blue Devils shot rounds of 377 and 361 to post an 18-over 738 in the six-count-five format event.
Seventh-ranked San Diego State leads the event with a one-over 721 (366-355). Duke, UC Irvine (+19, 739), Pacific (+21, 741) and Brigham Young (+27, 747) round out the top five heading into tomorrow's 18-hole final round.
Sophomore Julian Suri is tied for sixth after firing a one-under 143 on Monday. The St. Augustine, Fla., native recorded 17 pars and one bogey en route to a one-over 73 in the opening round of play. Suri capped off the day with three birdies, 14 pars and a bogey for a second round 70. He birdied two of his final three holes (No. 2 & No. 3) for his second under par of the season.
Wes Roach, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., posted a two-over 146 (75-71) and is tied for 13th heading into the final round. He carded seven birdies, 20 pars and nine bogeys on the day. In the opening round, Roach was one-under after 10 holes before suffering four bogeys over the final seven holes. In the second round, he played the opening 10 holes at two-under before slipping back to even-par with bogeys on No. 11 and No. 12. Roach recovered to finish with five pars and a birdie on the par 4 16th hole to cap off the 22nd under-par round of his career.
Sophomore Tim Gornik also shot a two-over 146 on Monday. He registered three birdies, 10 pars and five bogeys en route to a two-over 74 in the first round. Gornik followed up with an even-par 72 in the afternoon round. The Ljubljana, Slovenia native, birdied three of his first five holes of the second round to move to three-under. Gornik suffered three bogeys down the stretch to end the day tied for 13th.
Freshman Austin Cody posted rounds of 77 and 74 and is tied for 39th at seven-over. He had six birdies, including four in the second round, on the day. Freshman Yaroslav Merkulov and sophomore Adam Sumrall are tied for 47th after shooting 78-74=152s on Monday.
Sophomore Brinson Paolini and junior Spencer Anderson also delivered strong performances while playing as individuals. Paolini is tied for sixth after shooting 73-70=143 (-1). The Virginia Beach, Va., native had five birdies, 27 pars and four bogeys on the day. Anderson is tied for 25th after posting a 72-77=149 (+5).
The Blue Devils open final round play on Tuesday at 12 pm (EST). Duke will be paired with host UC Irvine, Pacific and San Diego State.
