DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke ACTION Program teamed up with the Duke Children's Hospital Healthy Lifestyle's Program for the third meeting of the 2010-2011 First Year Action Program.
This month's meeting focused on service and leadership with 150 first year student-athletes and 50 upperclassman student-athlete mentors teaming up with 24 participants from the Duke Children's Hospital Healthy Lifestyles program to have a night of fun activities in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The night included a warm-up activity and stretching, an activity called Captain My Captain and Exercise Simon-Says. The night concluded with everyone breaking up into small groups to discuss why they exercise, the challenge of exercise and how they overcome this challenge by setting personal goals.
The First Year ACTION Program is multifaceted in helping first year student-athletes effectively lead themselves during this transition year at Duke. The learning to lead element of this program focuses on effective transition skills, role acceptance and being a good teammate and initial leadership development.
All first year student-athletes participate in this year long program that utilizes workshops, guest speakers, self-reflection and small group discussion. First year student-athletes benefit from the initial establishment of peer connections, mentoring by upperclassmen as well as developing skills to help them make the kind of choices that will allow them to be successful not only during their first year at Duke but during their entire academic and athletic career at Duke.
The Healthy Lifestyles program is a comprehensive clinical treatment program for children and adolescents who are overweight or obese. The Healthy Lifestyles program offers clinical treatment and a free exercise group for teens and support groups. The program is part of the Center for Nutritional Disorders and Obesity, which provides clinical treatment, as well as educational opportunities and community outreach.
