DURHAM, N.C. - Two Duke women's soccer standouts -- Tara Campbell and Laura Weinberg -- each were named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week on Monday, after guiding the Blue Devils to victories over sixth-ranked Boston College and N.C. State.
On Thursday, Duke registered a 3-0 upset win over the Eagles and then closed the weekend with a 2-0 shutout of the Wolfpack.
Campbell, a sophomore goalkeeper from Cincinnati, Ohio, registered two shutouts on the week with the blanking of sixth-ranked Boston College marking one of the biggest wins in her short career. In the match versus the Eagles, Campbell registered a career-high 12 saves as she faced 18 total shots. She also notched one save against N.C. State during 90 minutes of play.
Overall, Campbell has notched three straight shutouts and has posted a career-best seven shutouts on the year. The Duke defense hasn't allowed a first half goal over the last six matches and has an overall total of nine shutouts this season.
A freshman from Boca Raton, Fla., Weinberg registered the honors after totaling three goals and one assist on the week. The 5-9 forward tallied two goals in less than two minutes and assisted on another goal against sixth-ranked Boston College to propel the Blue Devils to a 3-0 victory. Weinberg backed that performance up with a second half goal against N.C. State.
Weinberg leads Duke with nine goals on the year and is one away from matching the Blue Devil single-season record for goals by a freshman. She currently ranks tied for third in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) stats for league games only with five goals in nine matches.
Duke (10-5-3, 4-4-1 in the ACC) will close the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 28 as the Blue Devils will host second-ranked North Carolina at 7:00 p.m. It will mark senior night for eight Duke seniors.
