Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
On the scrimmage today and what she hopes to get out of it for the team:
It's just great to get out there, put the uniforms on and have the team play and give our assistant coaches a chance to coach a little bit. There's a broad range of what we try to accomplish in a Blue/White. The different combinations, it's kind of a pain for the team, they have to switch up their uniforms and move around a lot, but we're trying to get film. The bottom line is to get film of everybody and be able to teach from that film as much as possible. The guys are great, the guys practice with us, and they're great to play against because of their quickness and what they do so we incorporate them too just because of our numbers right now not being full. I thought it was a good day, I thought there were good things. Obviously we need to get a lot better in all areas. But, a good day, a good day to learn from.
On playing against the men's scout team:
I think it was a good ten minutes, and good intensity. I did see certain players really step up against the guys which they had not done against their teammates. It was interesting and that's part of the reason the last ten minutes we decided to do that. We rotated. We didn't play it like we'd play it in a game, we're not going to have Jazz on the bench and Karima and others. We rotated people to give experience and that's what I liked about that, there were some good plays made, good time and score down the stretch, especially for young players.
On the initial White squad as the starting unit:
As of today it was, depending upon how practices go from here on out there could be some changes, it's kind of in motion. Obviously you have the three seniors, and you've got some flexibility there. It's one of those things where every day in practice matters. From this film we'll learn a few things so I can't say that that will be the lineup for the first exhibition, I'll have to wait and see who's most productive, and who performs.
On allowing her assistants to coach the scrimmage in her place:
I tried to stay away. The first half I just took notes so we could talk a little at half time, and also to give the coaches the chance to coach, not being right on top of both of the coaches there. But after the first half I liked to move around. It's a good event to get everybody going a little bit, and give an opportunity for our coaches who will be head coaches to be in that hot seat and try to make decisions a little bit.
On the freshman class and the team's depth:
I can't tell yet, some days I do think that, but other days I don't. It's not a consistently deep team yet. I think there are times that we feel very deep and strong, and then there are other times not as much so. I think that's something for us to work on so that we can be a very consistent team.
On freshman Chloe Wells handling the ball at the point:
Well that's her pure position, Chloe is a pure point guard, Jas is going to obviously play point for us and the 2. She'll be on-ball off-ball there. Chelsea Gray will be handling the ball as well, so the three of them, with [Jasmine Thomas], Chloe [Wells] and Chelsea with primarily run the point, although at times other people have stepped up there too like Shay Selby or Tricia Liston. I know [Karima Christmas] is sort of a point-4, I think she can play one through 4. So there's a versatility component with this team that I've never had. That's definitely true. There's a combination piece and it's going to be interesting to see the combinations together and right, and how we get the calls defensively together and right. That's going to be a challenge.

On the intensity of the fourth quarter:
“I think you saw it when we got a few steals back to back, and got a fast break layup. You can just see the tempo pick up. A lot of that comes with knowing that you don't have to save anything, you have subs, and you can put it all out there. When you're going five on five you want to go as hard as you can but there's something in the back of your mind saying 'ok I've got to rest at some point'. We talk a lot about resting at the right time, resting on offense, but when you go against the guys you can go all out.”
On changing up the play calling with more versatility this year:
“For the most part we have the same offense, but we have put in some more motion. We've opened the floor, that s the bottom line. We are trying to spread out and give everyone an opportunity to cut and hit open players. So bringing KT [Krystal Thomas] up gives us some driving angles from the wing and the baseline, and it also gives her the chance to hit that 15-footer, something which she is capable of doing.”
On being a senior and showing leadership to the underclassmen:
“Being an example, sharing our experiences with them. It all starts at practice. We come out here and play Blue/White. It's fun, we are going against each other. You get to see the stuff we are working on. But we really become a team at practice, what we do, how we hold each other accountable and just showing the freshmen that they don't have to wait until they are seniors to be leaders on this team is the biggest thing we can do for them.”
On the time period from the Baylor loss in the NCAA Tournament to practice starting now:
“It's been like my other years. You take what happened at the end of last season and you learn from it. This year I had some time away from Duke, away from the program, but it really never left my mind, which is why I came back. You work hard; you try your hardest to let the freshmen know what it was like to be where we were so that they have that hunger to get back just like we do. They haven't been there, with all five of them coming, and they are going to play. The sooner we can get them to feel how we feel about that game and about getting to the Final Four, the better.”

On the intensity of the fourth quarter:
“Playing those 30 minutes five on five then being able to play now and give it your all is just what we've been trying to do in practice. Going out there and playing against the guys gave us more freedom and allowed us to go all out.”
On coming into the season healthy:
“It feels great. It's smooth now. I'm just trying to take it slow, keep pushing ahead and hopefully nothing happens, just keep pushing forward.”
