DURHAM, N.C. – Spearheaded by goalkeeper
Dan Wigrizer's MVP performance, Team Kennedy defeated Team Bissette by a 22-19 count to claim the inaugural Duke Box Lacrosse League championship on Friday morning on Central Campus.
Wigrizer was credited with 22 saves in net while scoring one goal. Team Kennedy also received six goals from
Sam Spillane and four markers from
David Lawson. Team Bissette, which reached the championship game after posting an 0-3 record in the regular season, was led in the finals by
Robert Rotanz (6 goals) and
Zach Howell (5 goals).
Team Kennedy claimed a 12-7 advantage at halftime after Spillane scored twice in a 3-0 run that spanned the final four minutes of the opening session. Lawson then scored twice to open the second half, pushing the margin to seven goals, as Team Kennedy coasted to the title.
“We had a great week,” said Duke head coach
John Danowski. “The first season of the DBLL was outstanding. All four teams competed at a high level, and you have to give credit to
Tom Montelli and
Sam Spillane for putting together a championship-caliber squad.”
With the three-goal triumph, Team Kennedy earned the Skinner Cup, named after coach emeritus
Roy Skinner, who was on hand to present the trophy to the champions. Wigrizer received the
Joe Ferraro MVP trophy for his efforts.
