DURHAM, N.C. – This weekend will feature the Blue Devils in two meets as Duke closes out its home schedule against Virginia on Friday and North Carolina on Sunday.
On Friday evening, both the men and then women will be faced with a tough challenge against the Virginia Cavaliers. The Virginia women are ranked 11th and most recently handed a loss to No. 23 Florida State. The women are led by freshman Lauren Perdue who has twice earned ACC Performer of the Week honors and has posted the conference's top time in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles this season. The ninth-ranked Virginia men are 5-1 (2-0 ACC) on the season after dropping the No. 15 Seminoles last week. A pair of sprinters, Scot Robison and Matt McLean, headline the Cavalier men's squad, both of whom have garnered ACC Performer of the Week recognition this season. The meet gets underway at 5:00 p.m.
Sunday will be a bittersweet day for many of the Blue Devils as the seniors will be swimming in the last home meet of their careers.
Senior
Shannon Beall summed up the general consensus of her classmates: “The past four years here have been amazing, but I cannot believe how fast they went by. I am thrilled that I got a chance to continue my swimming career at Duke, and every minute of being part of a team that means so much to me has been totally worth it.”
Duke will face a 14th-ranked North Carolina men's team and a 15th-ranked women's program, both battle-tested. The Tar Heel men are a perfect 8-0 (4-0 ACC) on the year while their female counterparts, having suffered a lone loss, stand at 7-1 (4-0 ACC). Leading the way for the Tar Heels are junior freestyler Joe Kinderwater and sophomore all-around Laura Moriarty.
This senior class has been particularly special for head coach
Dan Colella. “This group was [my and assistant coach
Dawn Chuck's] first recruiting class and has been instrumental in helping us move our program to new heights within the ACC. They have established a strong foundation for this program to continue to build on. We are excited for all their contributions and achievements and we will miss them.”
