DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University senior Elisabeth Redmond was drafted by the St. Louis Athletica with the 64th pick in the seventh round on Friday during the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) Draft, which took place at the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.
Redmond became Duke's second player drafted by the WPS in consecutive years as Rebecca Moros was drafted with the 36th pick by the Washington Freedom in 2009.
"I am really excited," commented Redmond. "I didn't expect this at all. Playing professionally is obviously something I have always wanted to do and I wasn't ready for my career to be over with at the end of last year."
A product of Morristown, N.J., Redmond led the ACC and ranked sixth nationally in assists per game with a 0.6 per game average. She notched 12 assists in 20 games to go along with three goals and 18 points. Redmond's two game-winning goals also ranked tied for first on the Blue Devil squad.
In the ACC stats, Redmond ranked tied third in shots and third in shots per game with 79 and a 3.95 average, respectively, first in assists (12) and first in assists per game (0.60). Over her career, Redmond accumulated 35 assists, 26 goals and 87 points. She ranked second in assists, seventh in goals and fourth in points on the Duke career charts. Redmond's 14 game-winning goals also ranked third on the Blue Devil list.
"We are very excited for Elisabeth to be drafted and to move on to the next level of soccer in her career," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "We think that she will be an outstanding professional player. She has all the ingredients and she is excited. Our coaching staff and everyone else wishes her the best of luck."
Redmond earned NSCAA All-Southeast Region, All-ACC, TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Season, ACC Co-Player of the Week, CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer, Duke/Nike Classic All-Tournament team and was on the preseason watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
Last year, St. Louis finished second in the WPS with a 10-6-4 overall record and advanced to the semifinals of the playoffs.
