DURHAM, N.C. - With all of the summer collegiate baseball seasons completed, the Duke baseball team returned to campus last week to begin preparing the 2010 baseball season.
Several Blue Devils enjoyed success on their respective summer squads, including all-stars Dennis O'Grady, Alex Hassan, Eric Pfisterer and David Putman. With another season of experience under their belts, the 2010 Duke baseball team already boasts a talented veteran group ready to build on last season's 35-24 record and solid 15-15 showing in ACC play.
As the team gets set to open fall practice, here is a look at how the Blue Devils did during the 2009 summer season.
Cape Cod Baseball League

Gould ended his seasons in the Cape Cod Baseball League in scorching fashion, going 5-for-9 with three walks, no strikeouts and two RBI during the CCBL playoffs. With Gould anchoring the lineup, the Orleans Firebirds advanced to the third round of the playoffs before falling to eventual Cape Cod League champion Bourne. The playoff surge bumped Gould's average up over 20 points and made him the league's second hottest hitter during the CCBL playoff run. A career .337 hitter in his three seasons at Duke, Gould will now return for his senior season as one of the centerpieces of Duke's lineup.
Alex Hassan

Hassan pulled double-duty once again for Orleans and was among the top outfielders and closers in the league. His .289 batting average was the third highest on the Orleans squad, while his four saves and 1.13 ERA out of the Firebirds bullpen led the team. Hassan's performance not only earned him all-league honors, but also helped solidify a deal with the Boston Red Sox, who took him in the 20th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. After signing his professional contract, Hassan was assigned to Class-A Lowell where he hit .350 in 17 games. He has since been moved to Greenville where is playing in the Class-A South Atlantic League.

Duke's starting center fielder in every game as a freshman, Piwnica-Worms enjoyed the same role with the Lunkers and was one of the league's best defensive outfielders. He made just one error all season.

With one of the best run producers in the SCBL in their lineup, the Copperheads made the SCBL Playoffs with a 24-18 record, which was the second best in the league.
