DURHAM, N.C.-Former members of the Duke University men's lacrosse team Nick O'Hara and Brad Ross helped lead the Toronto Nationals to the Major League Lacrosse Championship in Annapolis, Md., with a 10-9 win over Denver on Sunday, Aug. 23. The Nationals are in their first year as an expansion team in the league.
O'Hara kicked off the scoring for Toronto, netting a goal just 59 seconds into the game. It was his second goal of the season. He also picked up two ground balls in the game. Ross, who tallied a two-point goal in the semifinal win, fired two shots on the cage but was unable to come up with a score.
With the score knotted at nine apiece, Toronto's Shawn Williams tallied a goal with 45 seconds left in regulation to lift the Nationals to the MLL title. After Denver's early four-goal stretch, the game was a back and forth affair with teams trading goals and leads until the closing 45 seconds.
Also in action for the Blue Devil contingency was Mike Ward for the Denver Outlaws. Ward rifled home his first goal of the season in the third quarter to put the Outlaws ahead by two.
Toronto scored the game's final two goals to take home its first MLL Championship. The Nationals defeated Long Island 14-13 in the semifinals.
