DURHAM, N.C.-Seven former Duke University men's lacrosse players will suit up this weekend in Major League Lacrosse's 2009 New Balance Championship Weekend in Annapolis, Md. The weekend kicks off with the semifinals on Aug. 22 and the championship game on Aug. 23 at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
Kevin Cassese, Matt Danowski, Zack Greer, Nick O'Hara, Brad Ross, Mike Ward and Matt Zash all will try to help lead their respective teams to the Major League Lacrosse Championship. The New Balance Championship weekend features top-seeded Denver Outlaws against fourth-seeded Boston Cannons. The second-seeded Toronto Nationals will face off against the Long Island Lizards in the second semifinal.
Danowski, Greer and Zach will don the jersey for the Long Island Lizards, which earned the No. 3 seed after defeating the Chicago Machine 13-11 in the regular season finale. Danowski paces the Lizards' attack with 31 points from 16 goals and 14 assists. Greer returns for the playoffs after missing seven games due to injury, while Zash is a leader in the midfield and has helped Long Island to allow just 12.75 goals per game.
Kevin Cassese has been a midfield leader for the Boston Cannons as they clinched the fourth playoff spot with a 6-6 record. Cassese has played in 11 games, scoring seven goals, including a pair of two-point efforts, for nine points.
Lining up for the Toronto Nationals will be O'Hara and Ross. O'Hara helps anchor the Nationals' defense and has two goals and 20 ground balls on the season. In his first season in Major League Lacrosse, Ross has played in three games and scored twice. He made his debut on July 23, tallying his first professional goal against the Cannons.
Ward is a midfielder for the regular season champion Denver Outlaws. Playing in 11 games with the squad, the 2007 graduate has two assists to help the Outlaws to a league-best 9-3 record.
