DURHAM, N.C. ? Bo Waggoner and Carly Seymour each picked up victories for Duke as the Blue Devils swept the 5,000m run at the 2009 Duke/asics Twilight meet Sunday evening at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Seymour's time of 17:19.80 gave her the individual win and was an ECAC qualifier, while Waggoner clocked 14:37.63 and was followed by teammate Andrew Brodeur in a second-place time of 14:40.25 as Duke went 1-2 in the event on the men's side. Waggoner is now undefeated in the 5K at Wallace Wade after winning the 2008 Duke Twilight and the 2009 Duke Invitational.
Sophomore Amy Fryt won the pole vault in 11-11.75, marking the sixth time this outdoor season she was won her event. That includes her ACC Championship in the event at the conference meet at the University of Miami. Today's clearance gave Fryt another ECAC qualifier.
Duke placed 2-4-5 in the men's 1500m, led by Cory Nanni's IC4A-qualifying time of 3:47.42 as he took second, followed by Joshua Lund in fourth in 3:51.31 and Stephen Clark in fifth in 3:51.68.
Chris Rowland took third in the 800m as he ran 1:52.00, while Will Smith won the steeplechase in 9:20.09.
Brittany Whitehead finished third in the 400m as she clocked 56.51 to move into third all-time at Duke in the event. Fellow freshman Leslie Morrison took fourth in the 800m in an ECAC time of 2:10.96.
The women's 100m hurdles saw a 3-4 Duke finish as Wendy Jaglom took third in 15.54 and Caitlin Johnson was fourth in 16.26.
In the field, Tony Shirk took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 15-9.00. The duo of Mike Schallmo and Michael Barbas went 2-3 in the shotput, with Schallmo taking second with a throw of 53-5.75 and Barbas following in third with a 53-2.75. Both were IC4A marks, while Schallmo moved into the fourth spot all-time at Duke as he set a PR by over a foot. Barbas then came back in the discus to throw 149-3 and take fourth there. Schallmo completed his day with a fourth-place showing in the hammer, throwing 167-3.
Next up for the Blue Devils is one more regular-season outing on Fri., May 8 at the UNC Last Chance meet, before the teams head north to the IC4A and ECAC Championships May 15-17 in Princeton, N.J. NCAA Regionals are the following weekend, May 29-30, in Greensboro, N.C.
