HOBOKEN, N.J.?Duke University's Brad Ross and Ryan McFadyen were selected in the 2009 Major League Lacrosse Draft held tonight at Stevens Institute of Technology. Ross and McFadyen were selected in the second and fourth rounds, respectively.
Ross was the first Blue Devil to go as the Toronto Nationals picked up the midfielder with the 15th overall pick. A three-time All-America selection, Ross was fifth on the team in scoring this season with 27 points. He finished his career with 102 points (76g, 26 a), the 37th Duke player to reach the 100-career points mark. Toronto joins Major League Lacrosse in 2009 and is 2-0 in its inaugural season.
McFadyen had his number called in the fourth round, going to the Washington Bayhawks as the No. 33 overall pick. The Mendham, N.J., native anchored the Blue Devil defense in 2009 that allowed 8.43 goals per game. He started all 19 games this season and picked up 24 ground balls. For his career, McFadyen played in 75 games, starting 44 of those, and picked up 82 ground balls. The Washington Bayhawks finished the 2008 season with a 4-8 overall record and are 1-1 in 2009.
The duo of Ross and McFadyen helped Duke post a 73-14 overall record, advancing to the national title game twice and the NCAA semifinals four times, including each of the past three seasons. Duke finished 15-4 in 2009, earning a spot in the NCAA semifinals for the third consecutive year.
