Completed Event: Men's Lacrosse versus Georgetown on May 10, 2025 , Loss , 12, to, 16

5/10/2009 12:15:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
Duke Head Coach John Danowski
General statement on the game
“I'm at a loss for words. Nobody expects to go up 10-0 in the first round of playoffs, especially against Navy. I'm not so surprised at the 10, but certainly surprised by the zero. You just have to keep playing. We certainly knew that the Navy kids were not going to quit and they played a great second half and actually won the second half. So you have to tip your cap to the Midshipmen.”
On playing North Carolina again
“It's a great honor. It's a great honor to be in the quarterfinals. The Duke-North Carolina game are classic lacrosse games. We're honored to play North Carolina. It's something that we all look forward to.”
On the 30-minute weather delay
“Normally we would [come up to the stadium] before the game, but we kept the guys down in the locker room. There is more room and they can relax and they started to stretch. We just tried to keep them really loose and really light.”
On dodging down the alleys against Navy
“We went from up top once. Behind [the goal] the footing didn't seem to be great. We scored some goals in transition, got some things off the faceoff, got some things from the defensive end of the field, so we were really pleased. I thought the guys were really unselfish.”
Senior Ned Crotty
General statement on the game
“We came out strong. I know a lot of us were really excited to play them. We have never played them before. I think a lot of us like the way the tournament was set up and playing a team that we didn't know anything about.”
On the first half
“I definitely did not expect that first half. We watched film on them. They're a disciplined team, they're a fast team, they're athletic, but it really was our defense. The defense played great, Rob [Schroeder] played awesome and when you have that kind of momentum coming from the defensive end then offensively you get confidence. We moved the ball well and got our shots.”
On playing North Carolina for a third time
“It's awesome. The Duke-UNC rivalry is something that has been great, especially since I've been here. And it's gotten even better this year as Coach Breschi has done a great job for them. They're playing their best lacrosse now, so we're really excited to play them again. We want to play the best teams. It should be a great game up in Annapolis.”
On the improvement in shooting this season
“It's something that we've really worked on. This past week now that we're out of school we'll have shooting camp for about a half hour or 45 minutes after practice. We just line up and take four goals out and split up everybody a coach says ?shoot top left, shoot top right'. We're doing stuff that we couldn't do six weeks ago, so I think it's definitely paying off. It's definitely something we're proud of. We've worked hard at it and it's paying dividends.”
Junior Parker McKee
On playing Navy
“We didn't really know what to expect not having ever played Navy. We knew that they were going to hold the ball and pace the game very well so we tried to be as disciplined and fundamental as we could and not let them lull us to sleep.”
On the development of the defense this season
“I think we pack it in a lot more in the middle so guys are getting those open looks anymore in the middle right in front of the crease. That's been one of our biggest things and then just building our team chemistry. Being able to slide and help each other, and knowing when to [have been very important]. The close defensemen are taking a lot of ownership of their men and not letting them get any looks. We've come a long way and Schroeder's been huge in the net for us too.”
On picking up 14 ground balls
“It was kind of weird. The ball kind of came to me. I think I had a couple ones where the ball was in the air and I just looked up and it was just right above me. They just kind of came to me and I picked them up.”
