CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? John Austin (javelin) and Christy Adamyk (10K) notched All-ACC honors Thursday by placing in the top three in their events during day one of the 2009 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Miami's Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
Austin threw a season-best 219-9 to take third in the javelin, nearly 10 feet further than his previous best in 2009. The mark was both an NCAA Regional and IC4A standard while giving him the All-ACC nod and six points for Duke. Bobby Weinstein took sixth in the javelin in 202-2, also good for both postseason marks and three points.
Adamyk, in her first career 10K, ran 36:07.13 for third place to pick up all-conference honors and score six points. James Osborne took 11th in the men's 10K in 31:51.51.
Duke's Tyler Clarke sits in third place after day one ? five events ? of the decathlon, just 27 points behind UNC's Daniel Keller and 13 in front of the fourth place performer with day two starting tomorrow. Clarke's day-one total of 3,909 points is on pace for a Duke school record and possible NCAA qualifier as it marks the highest day-one total in Duke history by 200 points. Clarke set personal best performances in his first three events.
Mike Schallmo took seventh in the hammer throw, notching a season best by over six feet as he threw 163-10. Having never thrown the hammer until this outdoor season, Schallmo posted a clutch performance today. After fouling on his first two throws in the prelims, he threw a PR to qualify for the finals on his last throw. He then fouled on his first two tries in the finals, but again broke his personal best to take seventh and score two points, the first Blue Devil to score at ACCs since 1988.
After day one, the Duke men have 11 points and the women six with the majority of the running events set for Friday's action. Virginia leads the way on both the men's and women's sides. Highlighting the Blue Devils' slate will be Clarke rounding out the decathlon and Ryan McDermott entering the 3000m steeplechase as the conference favorite.
