CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Robert Weinstein, Patricia Loughlin, and Amy Fryt won their events at the Joe Hilton UNC Invitational Saturday at the University of North Carolina's Irwin Belk Track at Fetzer Field, highlighting another quality outing for the Duke track & field squads.
Weinstein won the javelin with a throw of 201-08, another IC4A qualifier for the senior.
Loughlin, an All-East performer in the steeplechase in 2008, clocked 10:51.61 in the event to win and notch an ECAC mark. Her teammate, freshman Mary Carleton Johnston, completed the first steeple of her collegiate career in 11:29.13 to take third.
Fryt won the pole vault for the fourth weekend in a row, jumping 12-11.5 to remain unbeaten this outdoor season. Teammate Cassie Ludwig cleared 12 feet for the first time this season, leaping 12-1.5 to take fourth.
Freshman Michael Barbas notched his outdoor personal best in the shot put, throwing 53-3.5, good for second place. Mike Schallmo set a personal best with a throw of 157-6 in the hammer, taking sixth and moving into second all-time at Duke in the event. The women's discus saw freshman Courtney Bowen improve 10 feet as she threw 137-6 for eighth place. The mark was just one meter shy of an ECAC mark.
The Duke men's 1500m run saw four athletes set personal bests and three attain lifetime best performances. Joshua Lund paced the squad in 3:51.58 for fourth place, followed by Stephen Clark in fifth in 3:52.38, James Kostelnik in sixth in 3:53.53, and Ken Sullivan in eighth in 3:54.65.
The Blue Devils will hit the ACC Championships next weekend from Thursday through Saturday, April 16-18, at the University of Miami. Both will look to improve upon last season's finishes, where the men took ninth with 36 points and the women 12th with 11.
