WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Sophomore Amy Fryt tied for first place in the women's pole vault today during day one of the 2009 Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., leaping 11-11.75 and highlighting a strong day for the Duke field performers.
Fryt is coming off a banner indoor season in which she earned All-East and All-ACC honors in the pole vault during only her second collegiate season. Anne Marie Gordon was sixth in the event in 10-11.75.
Robert Weinstein and John Austin went 2-3 in the javelin, as both threw 196-08 to move into a tie for fifth-place all-time at Duke. Both were IC4A qualifying marks. Because Weinstein's second throw was further than Austin's, he gets second and his teammate third.
Mike Schallmo and Michael Barbas went 3-6 in the shot put, as Schallmo's throw of 51-8.50 moves him to fifth all-time at Duke and is a personal-best. Barbas' sixth-place mark of 51-00 is a new best for him as well.
On the track, Chris Rowland clocked a 1:53.00 to take fourth place in the 800-meters.
For the women, freshman Carly Seymour took sixth in the 5,000 in 18:03.33.
The Blue Devils will return to the track tomorrow for day two of the meet, with the field events kicking off at 9:30 a.m. and the running events starting at 12:20 p.m. The final events of the day are the men's and women's 4x400 relays which go off at 5:40 p.m.
